"sm bus" drivers missing in Device Manager

When installing a new Windows XP installation, I seemingly always miss some drivers. One that troubled me just then was one called "SM Bus", which came up under Control Panel - System - Device Manager.

In short, the SM Bus Controller (system bus controller) is part of the Intel chipset on the motherboard. It monitors your system motherboard's temperature and voltage. Programs that read your hardware sensors need this controller.
The software to install the necessary drivers should have come with your motherboard. Contact your supplier or its web site for the software. If necessary, you might locate a generic smbus controller driver on the Intel site.

Dig up your motherboard CD, or search on their site for your motherboard model. Intel generally have good support on their site and offer downloads for almost all of their products, including legacy motherboards.
